Community Mobilization

CLRJ recognizes that new Latina reproductive justice leaders are essential to make positive policy change for our communities.  As such, CLRJ is deeply committed to ensuring that its policy priorities are informed, shaped and moved by community-based Latinas.  CLRJ promotes leadership development, community-based education and mobilization efforts intended to advance the reproductive and sexual health, rights and justice of young Latinas.

Below are highlights of CLRJ’s major leadership development and community-mobilization projects: Latinas Empowered for Action and the Latina Leadership Network. Please see the Events page for additional CLRJ trainings, workshops, forums, and other community-based education and mobilization activities.

The Latinas Empowered for Action (LEA) Project is building the next generation of Latina Reproductive Justice leaders: skilled, mobilized and ready to take action!

LEA is a collaborative project developed by California Latinas for Reproductive Justice (CLRJ) and Latino Issues Forum (LIF) to build skills and provide advocacy opportunities for community-based and young Latinas.  The LEA Project focuses on empowering future leaders to promote policies that positively impact Latinas’ reproductive/sexual health and justice, while mobilizing our communities to create systemic reproductive justice policy change.

The LEA Project thanks all of its participants for a successful inaugural year!  In 2007, CLRJ and LIF trained over 100 emerging Latina leaders from diverse California regions – including the Central Valley, Sacramento, the Bay Area, Los Angeles and San Diego – concerning reproductive justice principles, while building effective policy advocacy and strategic communications skills.  CLRJ also provided LEA alumni with valuable networking, advocacy and movement-building opportunities, including coordinating tailored delegations to reproductive justice conferences – both within California and nationwide.

The 2008 LEA Training Series returns this spring!  The 2008 series includes regional trainings in the Inland Valley and Central Coast, followed by a Sacramento-based training with related advocacy opportunities.  We are very excited about launching a new Spanish-language LEA training in 2008, specifically tailored for Promotoras.  Please stay tuned for more information about the LEA activities coming soon!

CLRJ recognizes that new Latina leaders are essential to mobilize communities, make systemic policy change and build a vibrant reproductive justice movement.  As such, starting in 2008, alumni of the Latinas Empowered for Action (LEA) Reproductive Justice Leadership Training Project will have the opportunity to remain connected and mobilized on reproductive justice issues through the Latina Leadership Network (LLN).

The Latina Leadership Network is a new program being developed by CLRJ and Latino Issues Forum to provide dynamic LEA alumni with opportunities to become involved with advocacy, mobilization and networking.  The LLN program seeks to:

  1. Educate community-based Latinas about the reproductive justice framework and how it relates to the various aspects of Latinas’ lives;
  2. Mobilize Latinas on reproductive justice policy and advocacy issues; and
  3. Connect Latinas to reproductive justice campaigns and movement-building efforts, both locally and throughout California.

Latina Leadership Networkparticipants will also have the opportunity to become actively engaged with a wide range of CLRJ activities, including advocacy campaigns, policy briefings, community forums, media spokesperson opportunities, presentations, and future LEA trainings.

Please stay tuned for the Latina Leadership Network’s exciting launch coming soon!
